Her classes are designed to teach techniques that work for all machine quilters, longarm, midarm and sit-down quilters can all benefit from many of her techniques. Though much of her familiar work is seen in shows, the same techniques are effective in everyday quilting. Running a successful quilting business requires that she stays on top of all the new quilting products available. She strives to make each class unique, offering different ideas and techniques in each one.
In many of her classes she offers class notes for an additional $5. All notes are multiple pages in color with drawing and photos.....a great value to take away what you have learned.

Technicalities.....turning ideas into show quilts
This class will focus on the little details that turn good ideas into great quilts using longarm quilting techniques. This class will not focus on drawing the designs, but on the logistics of applying the quilting designs while avoiding common pitfalls. Renae will discuss the processes she used for her latest award-winning quilts, beginning with marking the top and ending with blocking and shipping the finished quilt. This is a very visual class with many photos of pitfalls and solutions, presented in a PowerPoint format. This is a fast paced classes created for the advanced quilter who is ready to move into show quilting.
Basics to Make Beauties
Do you need to learn where to start…and why? Renae will try to replicate the experience of sitting in her studio and learning what she does with a quilt top and why she does it. She will share ways to prepare and load the quilt top, border ideas, template tips, tension solutions and suggest tools. Some of the techniques covered will be stitch in the ditch, crosshatching, filling empty spaces, connecting design elements in a unifying way and avoiding common pitfalls. This class is suitable for beginners and confident beginners. More experienced quilters may benefit more from Renae’s Technicalities class.
Feather Your Nest
Have you been a chicken about trying freehand feathers? In this class you will learn many feather variations and which application works best in different situations. Perhaps you have heard the terminology: formal feathers, longarm feathers, funky feathers and feathers over the top. We will dissect them all so that you will gain the confidence to fly with your new found feather freedom!
In this class students can expect to see many variations of quilting feathers. We will start simple and become more advanced. Students will practice in their own notebook and take home pages of feather examples.
Travel Agent
Renae will be your tour guide as you put on your traveling shoes and learn how to use connectors to create continuous line designs for any shape. There are several basic connectors that work to join designs together. These tricks will work in sashings, borders and blocks. Learn several simple ways to connect non-continuous stencils and motifs into designs that don’t start and stop.
Students will learn to use simple shapes and ideas as connectors to speed up continuous line quilting. A notebook will be provided and students will follow along, taking home many ideas to help them move from here to there seamlessly.
Hip to be Square
Saggy baggy quilt backs? Quilts turning out warped, with dog-eared corners? Do you constantly struggle with tucks on the backs of your quilts? If so, this is the class for you! Renae will teach you how to quickly and easily get your machine set up properly, which will help eliminate some of these issues. She will load a quilt and teach you how to keep it square as you work through it, regardless of what brand of quilting frame you use. Remember…Its hip to be square!
In this class students will learn to troubleshoot machine set up problems they may not even know exist. Some common problems will be discovered, investigated and solutions will be offered.
Show off!!
Learn numerous background fillers that will show off your motifs. Watch Renae stitch her favorites while discussing the best places to use them. Distinguish why some background fillers steal the spotlight and some highlight as they should. Renae will discuss how different threads effect the way the filler designs look in the finished quilt.
Students will watch and follow along in their notebook to learn various background filler designs. They will take home pages of filler ideas.
On Your MARK, get set…GO!
If you wonder how and when to use which marking tools, this is the class for you! There are so many marking choices available, but how can you use each method most effectively? Many options will be demonstrated with numerous variations, some marking much detail and some marking very little. You’ll even learn methods of spacing that use markers without actually marking the quilt! You will be thrilled at the amount of time you save by learning to mark your quilt efficiently.
Students will follow along in the notebook and take home pages of marking secrets. This class will translate into considerable time saved when taken home to the quilter’s own studio.
Circles and Rays are IN THE BAG!
This class is designed to teach the concept of using radiating lines and circles as the basis of your design.You will learn methods of drafting that will require nothing more than drawing some circles, dividing them into wedges, and connecting some points (remember dot-to-dots?).Renae will share her fail proof method of fabric placement for paper piecing using a method that requires no tearing away of the foundation.Each student should be able to accomplish at least one section.Following this, she will demonstrate her method of curved piecing that is so simple and accurate you will wonder why curved piecing was ever intimidating.You will begin your project in class.With all that you learn you will easily complete it at home using one of two finishing options offered, a darling gadget bag (shown in brown/tan and red) or a smart wall hanging (shown in shocking lime/black/white).
Note that the two patterns are nearly the same but due to color placement they look completely different!
